Did you know that how we care for our animals can impact our local waterways?
From cleaning animal pens/structures/enclosures to managing grazing and pastures areas, these activities can impact local waterways if not managed properly.
The Animal Care and Handling Facilities Guide to Best Management Practices (BMPs) offers simple, actionable tips to:
- Place animal pens/structures/enclosures 50 feet from a waterway
- Maintain buffer of natural vegetation between pastures and grazing land and creek/river corridor
- Manage bedding and compost responsibly
- Properly manage waste (including wash water from stall wash-down, bathing horses, etc.)
Visit your city’s Stormwater Management (Buellton or Solvang) webpage to learn more about BMPs for Animal Care and Handling Facilities or to download a copy of this BMP in English or Spanish.
